Steve Potter Reflects On The Closing Of St. Louis’ Oldest Gay Block

Clementine’s, in St. Louis’ Soulard neighborhood, opened in It is the oldest gay bar in the area.

On Monday, the owners will pour their last drink, and Clementine’s will shut its doors.

Transcript: Finally, I'd enjoy to mention the closing of a long second meeting place in Soulard.

It's the bar, Clementine’s. And, it’s acknowledged as the oldest gay bar currently in operation in St. Louis.

Clementine’s has served the LGBT community since but it will no longer exist after this weekend.

It's been a popular destination.  It thrived at a time before the internet and social media, during a time when people needed a brick and mortar establishment to join and interact.



From the mids to end of the s, there was an almost continuous presence of homosexual woman and gay establishments here. For generations of LGBTQ St. Louisans, Grand and Olive was a favorite destination for a night out and an vital setting of their social lives.

The block of Olive is in Grand Center, a neighborhood that is today house to such major cultural institutions as the Fox Theatre and Powell Hall. It is also near the main campus of Saint Louis University.

Going back as far as the preceding twentieth century, this area was a busy entertainment district. Its central location and proximity to several streetcar lines and major roads made it a relatively convenient gathering place for people living throughout the St. Louis area. In , the St. Louis Republic called the neighborhood around Grand and Olive “a place of music and laughter and bustle and bright lights, of pretty women and carefree men.”

As far as we know, Dante’s Inferno ( Olive) was the first homosexual bar on the block. It is also one of the oldest identified gay bars anywhere in St. Louis. It opened in March , only a
