What’s an ‘Otter’ in the Gay Community? Why More Men Are Embracing the Term.
THERE IS A whole animal kingdom within the gay male community. Many queer men (proudly) name as bears, cubs, wolves, giraffes, bulls, chickens—all terms used to describe their appearance. The term to describe a man who has a slim to average build, with body and facial hair, and a more masculine appearance is called an otter.
What exactly is an otter?
“Otters belong to the broader bear community [plus-sized, hairy gay men] and are celebrated for their unique combination of leanness and body hair,” says Lee Phillips, LSCW, a psychotherapist and sex therapist who often works with LGBTQIA+ populations. “They are not as large as bears, but also not as hairless as twinks [thin, hairless gay men].”

Some gay men utilize types to portray, identify and transmit themselves. Who hasn't heard someone declare “he’s my type" or been asked if a guy is yours? There is always some disagreement around the terms we utilize and whether we should use them at all.
Therefore, you should be sensitive if applying a type to someone, bearing in consciousness some gay men reject them altogether as narrow, superficial, and demeaning. Equally, some use types affectionately and as a convenient shorthand.
It's a bit of a bear pit (no pun intended), but here's our take on types, though you are perfectly entitled to throw them out and be your own gay, your own homo, gay, etc.
Physical types and personal characteristics
Some guys are primarily attracted to physical types of gay men (eg: bears, twinks, and muscle guys) while some uncover characteristics in men most attractive (eg: warmth, intelligence, and humour). Others mix and match and understanding these distinctions is important.

I know that theres not much call for this kind of story on this site, but I idea Id write it anyway.
Since I was a kid, Ive known Ive had a thing for bald guys. Whenever Id see someone with a completely bare scalp walking around Id make sure to see them, they just looked so masculine and cool. And predictably, after a while the temptation to shave my own head grew larger and larger, I must have been fifteen at this point.
However, it got weirder. When I was seventeen, I was walking around the town I lived in and I saw a guy across the road. He had a completely bald head but where his eyebrows should have been, there was only skin. It instantly grabbed my attention, I was transfixed, it turned me on so much.

Most of the aging process doesn’t scare me. The idea of having gray hair is exciting, so long as I still have hair when that time comes. I ponder my smile lines form me look dashing in some lights. (In others, like Annabelle.) I hold no reason to tap my toes, so no biggie there. If I end up aging anything like my mother, I’ll have close to zero complaints.

I’m not exactly sure how they came to be, but surely it has something to perform with the innate depend on to group things together by category. (Think #organizationporn.) Whatever the reason, a multitude of factors participate into how you’re sorted, but by large, they come down to your age and body type.
A twink is a new, skinny, typically hairless childish gay man like Justin Beiber.
