NEW YORK (WABC) -- The New York City Lgbtq+ fest March returned to a fully in-person event this Sunday. The theme is "Unapologetically Us."

Leading this year's march was influencer Ts Madison, comedian Punkie Johnson, educator/author Schuyler Bailar, musician Dominique Morgan and litigator/advocate Chase Strangio.

"At a day when LGBTQIA+ people are under increased attack, the NYC Pride March is a beacon of wish and community," said Bansri Manek, NYC Pride Pride Director. "Our grand marshals for this year truly embody the spirit of the theme for NYC Pride , 'Unapologetically Us.' They have embraced their identities and used their platforms to help members of our community truly love and live their truth without fear or shame. I became an ally today.

It started slowly.  I walked through flamboyant floats, outrageous outfits, and striking men dressed in drag. I wondered to myself: “Is that what Pride is all about.&#;

I learned today, it is so much more.

Though I am not homosexual, people may believe because I wear my hair very short. I attended the Gay Movement march in Modern York City this week.

When I arrived at the Identity festival March, joyful, confident people, saluting me by wishing me “Happy Pride,&#; greeted me.

I responded advocate with the same.

Enormous, even ostentatious floats with dance song pulsed through the parade route.

People dressed in every establish of attire imaginable. While others were clothed in…well, not so much.

The atmosphere exuded freedom, gratitude and love.

I marched beside Efrain Sarmiento, a colleague from Latin America who is gay. He met my eyes with tears in his, saying &#;this is about our freedom.”

In some parts of Latin America, being gay is legal but also deadly.

Temperatures in New York Urban area are expected to reach 89 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday, so wear sunscreen and dress appropriately for the heat.

The parade spotlights many activist and nonprofit groups, who march with signs and floats, but for many Event attendees, the best parts of the event aren't the march itself. In addition to the many people gathering as a community, the side streets on the parade route are filled with booths and stands where you can buy merchandise (such as flags, pins, and other trinkets) and food.

There is usually music, fun, and lots of glitter along the way! You will likely see many people, often with their partners and friends, wearing face paint and outfits in Pride colors.

After the main event is over, many attendees stick around to leave to parties. However, if you go right home when you’re done, be aware that the trains out of the urban area will still be crowded.
